Every September and January, thousands of Gujarat students apply for UK student visas. And every cycle, files get refused for one preventable reason: incorrect fund show. This guide explains exactly how much bank balance a UK student visa needs in 2026, how the 28-day rule works, and which documents actually satisfy the visa officer.
What the UK Visa Officer Actually Checks
For a UK student visa (Student Route), you must prove you can pay your remaining tuition fees plus living costs for up to 9 months. The money must be genuinely available to you — not borrowed days before application, not ‘parked’ from an unexplained source.
- Tuition: fees for your course minus any amount already paid to the university. Your CAS statement shows the balance due.
- Living costs (2026): £1,483 per month for courses in London; £1,136 per month outside London, for up to 9 months. Most UK universities outside London (Coventry, East London corridor cities, etc.) use the outside-London figure.
Simple example: a 1-year master’s outside London with £4,000 fees remaining = £4,000 + (9 × £1,136 = £10,224) ≈ £14,224 — roughly ₹15 lakh at typical exchange rates. That entire amount must be evidenced under the rules below.
The 28-Day Rule (Most Students Get This Wrong)
Your funds must have been in an eligible account (yours, your parent’s, or a legal guardian’s) for 28 consecutive days, ending on or before the date of the closing balance. And the statement must be no older than 31 days at the date you submit the visa application.
- Sudden large deposits days before application → refusal risk.
- Money in cash, mutual funds, shares or property → not accepted as liquid funds.
- Education loan sanction letter from an approved bank/NBFC → accepted in place of cash balance for the loan amount.
Accepted Documents
- Bank statements (28+ days of history) from a regulated bank.
- Education loan sanction letter on bank letterhead (name, amount, loan type).
- Official financial sponsor confirmation, if applicable.

5 Mistakes That Cause UK Visa Refusals in Gujarat Files
- 1. Fresh deposits without explanation — funds moved from gold sale, property sale or relatives days before application.
- 2. Wrong living-cost maths — using last year’s figures or London rates for a non-London university.
- 3. Ignoring the 31-day freshness window — statement old at submission date.
- 4. Loan letter without disbursement clarity — officers want sanctioned-and-available loans, not ‘in process’.
- 5. Mismatch between CAS and funds — tuition numbers on CAS not reflected in your proof.
How To Build a Strong Fund Show (2026 Checklist)
- Start financial planning 3–4 months before intended application.
- Let large funds ‘season’ in the account well beyond 28 days.
- Pair cash balance with an education loan sanction to reduce pressure on pure cash — our free loan assistance covers this.
- Prepare a one-page source-of-funds note: income history, ITR links, property sale deeds if any.
- Verify every document against your CAS before paying the visa fee.
